Primarily bloating, but secondary signs can include :-
More rapid and laboured breathing. Slight bulging of the eyes (not really popeye, just slight), hiding in the corner, white stringy faeces. Lastly, and rather strangely, slight white haziness to the water. On occasions when I've had an outbreak the haziness can appear before symptoms appear in the fish. I treat using octozin & daily water changes, taking extra care to syphon out any faeces, whilst the haziness remains there's a risk that other fish in the tank will develop symptoms, once the haziness disappears, further spread is unlikely.

Thanks for that Rob, really good info, more to it than I thought, so is it better to under feed? or is a gut germ that develops?........

There's probably more than one cause, but probably the most common is hexamita, the same protozoan that causes hole in the head.
Overfeeding does seem to be a factor, presumably the hex. is not so much feeding directly off the infected fish, but off the food in the gut. I presume that the damage is caused when the parasite multiples to the point that the gut becomes blocked and/or ruptures. For that reason, whilst treating an infected fish stop feeding all together. If necessary they can survive several weeks without food.

Thanks Rob, so it's actually down to a Parasite in the gut, hexamita, so if this is treated at an early stage with octozin it can be cured? and the octozin won't harm the other fish? many thanks

octozin won't harm the other fish?
Octozin won't harm your other fish, I'm not sure if it's safe with snails, shrimps etc.

so if this is treated at an early stage with octozin it can be cured?
Treating with octozin, water changes, etc. may save the fish, but by the time a fish is showing signs of bloating the disease is already very advanced, and often it will be dead within hours. I'd say that at best you could hope for a 1 in 3 or 1 in 4 survival rate. What treating with octozin does do, is reduce/prevent the spread of the disease. Without treating there's a good chance that other fish in the tank will die too, if you treat early enough, & most importantly, stop feeding, then there's a very good chance of limiting losses to those fish that first showed symptoms.
