My DIY fiter project
I was recently at James studdarts' fish house and noticed his K1 Moving air driven filters, after a little reading up I decided that they would be a fantastic addition to my fish house tanks.
This is what the K1 manufacturer states:
So I have now made some moving filters out of pop bottles and connected them up to an air line or the outtake of an under gravel air driven filter. Some images, should realy get video as the media is onstantly moving
I am also running my air driven sponge filters in each tank
This is what the K1 manufacturer states:
Kaldnes media provides the maximum active surface area for the bacteria to colonise, more than other types of static media. It is this process which removes harmful ammonia and nitrite from the water. As the Kaldnes media moves within the filter, it causes the old dead bacteria on the outside to be displaced. This makes space for new younger heavier feeding bacteria to rapidly colonise. Within the wheel is a protected surface which enables colonies of bacteria to naturally follow their lifecycle, of maturing, dying and then fueling the latter stages of the nitrification cycle. Kaldnes has been designed to provide the best possible habitat for both young and mature beneficial bacterial colonies. Unlike foam, matting, or other forms of static filtration media, the Kaldnes K1/K3 media is designed to move freely within your filter. The constant chaotic movement of the air from your pump, causes the media to self clean and thus requires no maintenance. This allows the filter to reach optimum effectiveness without the disturbance of periodic cleaning, avoiding unnecessary loss of bacteria within the filter. 50 Litres of K1 media will handle up to 250 grammes of food per day and for K3, 225 grammes of food per day. For retrofit of existing filters, K3 media is the most suitable due to its larger size and ease of control.

Well done Lisa! Those filters look so simple to put together. Very practical for a fish house, but I don't think I'd want one in my display tank!

For a display tank I would expect you would need to make a posh version

Yes, and pain all of the K1 with Gold Leaf, or Silver Leaf if you are alergic to Gold

Sounds classy, but wouldn't those metals change the water's chemistry and poison the fish?

9ct Gold might but pure Gold & Silver are a pure base metal (if I have the wording right), some people use a silver coin in fish tanks as a pure microbial silver coating kills fungal, viral and bacterial microbes on contact! I am sure I read something like that once
