I bred a gold male with a silver female 4 months ago as my first attempt at breeding angels after 4 years of keeping them, no idea of "hidden" genetics of the pair. I ended up having pretty much 50:50 mix of smokey and silvers so the gold must carry smokey. Recently one in particular which has always been a very unusual colour (gold based to the point of questioning albinism even as a fry yet turned out as a silver just gold based) developed some very blue irridescent patches surrounding it's stripes... This fish is already "shiny" it seems to reflect light just from its base colour I mean even in comparison with my 2 KK Zebra this fish is irridescent.

The mystery here though is that if this fish somehow carried blue gene and was presenting it, surely the "gold" would be cancelled to leave a more pale fish? Also the fish has full bars so there's no sign of stripeless etc... It's a very bizarre fish. I've seen a lot of angelfish and this one really is different. All the offspring have "metallic" ventral fins typically metallic blue and they're nice fish to look at if I may say so but I was really wondering what could be causing this blue iridescent, the "shiny gold" base and also what I could do in terms of breeding to improve this "pattern" in future generations?

He's the first angel shown - sorry about the lighting I'm terrible at filming!! (https://youtu.be/gJoHUq6xfeA)

Also this one shows off the base a little better...

Nice 'though he is, not all blue is down to pb.
Blue iridescence is often seen, especially around the gills but also, as in your fish outlining the black stripes. You may see the terms "snakeskin" and "glitter" banded about. I don't think anyone is sure if theses are two manifestations of the same thing, or two distinct traits. Glitter refers to individual blue flecks, whilst snakeskin is a network of blue iridescence. Some people suggest that both of these traits are enhanced by the pb gene, and that het. pb fish express these traits better than fish without the gene. Although it's often seen in wild fish, it seems to be particularly common in fish with a zebra gene, and, in my experience, often in marbles.
This is one of my wild caught Peruvian Nanay's, you can see something similar going on in this fish...

Oh I see... So the fish might be glitter/snakeskin? Is it an inheritable trait?

It seems to be heritable, but there may be other factors which influence the development, and it's expression may be controlled by multiple genes.

Awesome! The mom has a patch of it but it's literally one speck so I never really paid any notice to it. I was thinking if breeding him with a KK Zebra to see if this iridescent will improve think my mind has just been made... Smile
