Queation on Meth Blue
what dosage of meth blue should be used with eggs to stop fungus etc? And can to much be a problem apart from not being able to see to clearly in the tank?
The reason i ask is i had my neice here today & she was watching my fish fannng a spawn that was laid today & she asked how much should you use if putting in with eggs to stop fungus so i said just a couple of drops would be fine,i thought she was just showing intrest as i have just set up a tank for her so she can keep angels. The next thing i know is her telling me she was sorry & didnt mean it but she has just put some in the tank with the new spawn & it was a lot more than just a drop so when i had a look there was what i can only discribe as a large cload of meth blue working its way around the tank. I assume it should be ok but thought i'd best ask.

I used it at the recommended dose for white spot, but haven't used it for some time because I find it (IMO) weakens the fry. I now use acriflavine at 4x (ish) strength, I don't get belly sliders hardly and the fry seem much more robust (its safe in much higher amounts too).

Hi Grummie i would not have used any but my lovely neice only being 12 thought she was helping & now thinks she may have killed the eggs off or hurt the adults & went home crying.so are you saying that it could cause the young to be weak?

Oh bless. Poor little thing. I hope all turns out okay, for your niece's sake.

Re: Queation on Meth Blue
Opps, when my Daughter was a younger her & her friend decided to pour a cup of orange juice into one of my tanks (just in case the fish were thirsty aparently!?), luckily I noticed within an hour & did a full water change.
Now back to the meth blue, didn't it have the child safe top on it?
As to the eggs , a year ago I put too much meth blue in with a batch of cory eggs and decided never to use meth blue on eggs again, non of the eggs hatched due to this. Fingers crossed for you & the eggs.

Re: Queation on Meth Blue
I have seen some reports of scientific studies indicating that meth blue use increases the incidence of belly sliders, and that hydrogen peroxide (which many of the american breeders use) can cause similar problems.
Meth blue will also kill your filter bacteria, and personally I wonder if the reported problems are actually due to ammonia or nitrite resulting from the filter die off.
Since it's already been added to the tank, there's not much you can do except :-
1. water changes
2. use a carbon filter to remove it
3. keep your fingers crossed that it won't damage the fry.
A few years ago when my wife couldn't open a bottle of tablets, she handed it to our, then, 5 year old son who was insistent on trying to open it for her. 30 seconds later he handed her a tablet! We kept them on a very high shelf after that!

Re: Queation on Meth Blue
Hi all thanks for your replys
Answer to first question: YES it had the child proof cap on, but i dont think they stop 12yr olds as she had it open & put the meth blue in the tank in a mater of seconds.
On inspection this morning the parents are still fanning as expected but when i get home from work i'm going to pull the eggs as i dont think i want to find out that the young are or have sufferd due to this.
Then i will strip the tank down & give a good clean & replace the filter, but before i do that i'm going to get my neice round so she can help & maybe she will learn from this & realise she has to be responsible for her actions being as she is pestering me for some of my angels for her new tank.
I hope this will be a learning curve for her as she loves all animals & i know she would not have done this had she known the outcome. The meth blue etc will now be put out of harms way as i only have myself to blame for leaveing it where she could get it.Once again thank for all your replys as i think letting her read them will put all into perspective for her & be her punishment at the same time.

That's a shame. Let's hope they spawn again soon. I advise you lock away the meth blue though.
