Spirulina powder Empty Spirulina powder

Post  wedders13 Thu 11 Oct 2012, 12:01

I have a mature pair of smokey blue angels which have just spawned, the guy I bought them off has successfully raised previous spawns using Spirulina powder mixed with some milk. Has anyone else used this and if so how much and how often do you need to feed the fry, there are about 300 eggs @ a rough guess. Any advice would be welcome as this is my first time raising fry so I'm a bit aprehensive to say the least
Thanks Billy

I've never used Spirulina & milk, but it sounds like a recipe for serious water quality problems if you're heavy handed with feeding.
I feed newly hatch brine shrimp and although I have tried a few other foods, nothing else comes close. I've seen foods like white worms and vinegar eels suggested, especially for some of the more delicate varieties, but most breeders feed baby brine shrimp for the first few weeks.

powders are very polluting during initial feeding and best to use live foods such as brine shrimp and walterworm for the first month. Spirulina and Astanxthin are good but remember very small quantities! did you use the milk to bind the powder? is egg white not a better substitute?

Thanks for confirming what I thought about the powder but I thought it would sensible to check with the the experienced members of the site. I will be taking your advice and feed with BBS.

Just on the side with BBS watch out for flukes, you should treat for flukes using a formaldehyde based prodcut - lots out there, when you stop feeding BBS and move to flake/powders you should treat for flukes to eradicate. Let me know if you have any problems. Flukes can be observed when the fish buckle and shown to be heavy breathing of the gills.
