I've stopped keeping angels...
Hi everyone,
I've stopped keeping angels for the time being but won't hesitate to get some more when my work / home situation is a bit more settled.
I have run phpbb forums in the past and I think you have to be careful when evaluating the 'value' of a forum website like this. I wouldn't judge this website on member 'logins' or the number of mass visitors, instead, you have to look at the 'content' and the content here is very specialised and there are hundreds of posts from people who actually know what they're talking about, which is quite rare in this day and age. It's an educational site / resource so although visitors might not join (aren't we all sick of so many passwords and logins) it no doubt still has enough value built into it to warrant keeping the content alive in my opinion.
Not everyone wants to be on facebook but the obvious trend is that most people view content not from a computer but from a smart phone and whether this forum works well in that format is something which I haven't explored but it's probably essential. I don't think you should start again from scratch, just make sure the existing content is accessible on smaller screens.
Maybe there is enough information here for visitors to learn something new without needing to register as a member.
I stop by from time to time. I've always thought that the content here is so good that those in the knowledge could roll it into a book.
A site like this probably costs < 70 pounds per year to keep alive, so I'd vote to keep it.

Re: I've stopped keeping angels...
Hi Dean,
Thanks for the response, sorry to hear that you're angelfishless.
As I said in my post, this site doesn't belong to me, and I don't pay anything to keep it running, but that being the case don't feel inclined to start trying to change the format to make it mobile friendly, and I don't think, despite having moderator access, I have the necessary authority to start changing the format even if I wanted to.
I agree the site is an asset, the question is how much use this asset is getting, and whether there's any point in adding new information, if no-one is reading it. Not just this forum, but forums in general can often feel like you're stood in the corner talking to yourself.

Re: I've stopped keeping angels...
There are posts on here that I haven't read, not because I'm not interested but because everything else in life is competing for my time and attention and I didn't know they were there.
Might be worth emailing members from time to time just to remind them to come back to read the latest posts.
