Cleaning the substrate when it is fine sand.
I was wondering if anyone has any best practice for cleaning find sand. My tank contains 8 baby angels, 8 junior corps, 2 plecs & bogwood. I haven't tried vacuuming it yet, it's a new tank, the fish have been in a week but I'm thinking ahead as how best to tackle it.
Thank you in advance.

Use a standard gravel cleaner come syphon. But about 5 or 10 minutes before hand, run something through the sand, fingers, an old wooden fork from a set of salad servers, or the handle end of a long handled glass scraper all work well. After 5 minutes or so, most of the debris you've stirred up will have settled on the sand. Rather than digging the gravel cleaner into the sand, hold it just above, you should find that it sucks up most of the dirt and very little of the sand. With care you should be able to pour most of the dirt & water away just leaving the sand in the bottom of the bucket. Rince in fresh water & pour back in to the tank. Hth
