I that have been together a few months and spawned a few times, is there anything wrong with swapping a partner to hopefully achieve a different phenotype? Do the individuals react in any way?

If you have them in separate tanks, simply swapping the males, or females over will likely cause conflict, but removing the males, and then waiting until the females are about 3 days away from laying before introducing the prospective new partner is more likely to be successful.

This has worked, I have another two lots of eggs. I cant grow them on because of holidays coming up so they are taking their chances with the parents. If they eat them, fair enough. But I will be able to concentrate fully on the breeding later in the summer, when hopefully they will be experienced pairs..

I have one fish a koi, I was given it free from someone who couldnt get it to pair. Its a funny fish and still a single. I have never seen its breeding tube and it is a very picky eater. Its eyes seem large in proportion to its body so I am guessing its a runt, even though its adult size. I will hang on to it, as I have noticed sometimes if a pair arent getting it together, sometimes the presence of a third fish can bring the pair together and make them get on with the spawning, so it may have its uses.
