Re: scalare wanted
There are 3 recognised species of angel, Pterophyllum leopoldi (which are not very common in the trade). P. scalare, which is the the species most usually seen, and P. altum which are a more specialist fish. All wild angels have a basic body colour of silver with vertical black banding. There are now many different colour varieties of P. scalare, but the original wild type you're looking for are known as silver angels.
When you really get into it you'll discover that there are even sub variations within wild populations of P. scalare, if you can get hold of them, fish from the Manacapuru region have very attractive red shoulders, whilst those from the Rio Nanay in Peru often have strong orange colouration on the body, and considerable blue iridescence....
Manacapuru...
Rio Nanay....
Domestic Silver
Body shape can also vary considerably, especially in terms of the hight of the body and the head profile.
