L144s en route
I'm very excited. I'm expecting delivery of 2 x 1 1/4" L144 blue/black eyed Lemon Bristlenose Plecs tomorrow. They will be housed in my 3ft growout with angels, corries and a juvenile male Brown Bristlenose Plec. I've added two extra plant pots as caves for the newbies and I am hoping my existing Bristlenose behaves himself. I'll try to post pics when they are settled.

Hi Ian. They arrived safe and well. Just the one pic so far, they just disappear into the foliage! My juvenile male Brown Bristlenose has even noticed them yet.

Hi,glad they arrived safely. They look nice although a little pale could be the camera settings or just stress from being a box all night. Where did you get them from?

It has a little more colour in the flesh than the pic, but it's not very yellow. I got them from Penny Stone in Hampshire. They were described as "L144 Black/Blue Eyed Lemon Bristlenose. Here's a pic of the parents:

I cant believe i never noticed. I knew there was something but i thought it was the colour throwing me.
These are mine as you can see big difference in colour. Now and again mine throw out a few pale ones which i just throw in my community tank so i dont end up selling them on.

I see what you mean. It has one on the left, but not the right. I'm wondering if its been injured because I can just see the base. Here another pic:

I'm hoping they colour up when they settle. Maybe the pectoral fin will grow back as I can see the base? I was so excited, now I'm depressed.

Re: L144s en route
I wouldnt be to upset...at least its unique i have one that only has one eye its about 2" now and as far as i can remember it was born with one eye,but again i couldnt sell it on or cull it so ive kept it. Hopefully it will colour up once settled and more importantly its pectoral grows back. I take it the parents are longfin L144's..if you dont mind me asking how much were they?

The breeder said the fin should grow back, so it is not genetic. She said to use Esha Optima and lots of clean water. Fingers crossed. Don't mind you asking they were £5 each and £12 post.

Sorry Ian, I missed your post. No the fin hasn't grown at all. I had my suspicions it wouldn't. I have contacted the breeder and she says to use eSha Optima and plenty of water changes. Personally, after one month with no regeneration of the fin, it seems to me it won't grow back even with eSha. What do you think?
On a happier note, they have coloured up to a nice golden colour. I'll try to get some pics.

Missing Pectoral
I've contacted the breeder of my L144. I explained after 4 weeks of water changes etc there has been no regrowth of the pectoral and I therefore believe the defect is genetic.
I recieved a rather terse email in response:
Helen
With all due respect, with your attitude, I would strongly advise you against breeding, as plecos DO fight and DO get injured! Adult male plecos have territorial fights untill an Alpha male establishes himself, and then they continue to scrap while he defends his territory/spawn! If you want proof, just look on Youtube - 'plecos fighting'! And yes, their young fight too! (Some plecos are very hard to breed as they literally kill each other in the process. The Blue Eyed Panaque is an example.) So, should you decide to breed L144s, go with one male and two or three females.
As for the genetic angle, I quote...

See your email to me, below...
As for the one I sent you, it was ok when it left me.
You say yourself the plec seems healthy, with no redness/infection. If you choose not to use it in a breeding group, that is up to you. It stopped being my responsibility when it left me and was ok then.
I will refund a DOA should my policy requirements be met - photo, sent by email, of DOA in unopened bag within 1 hr of receipt . This is standard for many on ebay, Aquarist Classifieds, etc. With all due respect, this isn't a DOA.
This was my reply:
With all due respect, I breed angelfish who are a species of cichlid. They fight too, sometimes to the death, but normally just sustain ripped fins and scale loss. If an angelfish has fin damage it will regenerate within a week with good water conditions.
If this is an injury, would I not have seen some fin growth within the four weeks i've had him/her? Perhaps being an ancistrus the process takes longer than in angelfish?
As to your refund policy on doa's, I have exactly the same policy on my angelfish when I post.
Regards
Helen
I would like your opinions on this. Is the fin likely to regenerate after such a long period of time?

Hi Helen sorry to hear that your long awaited L144s were not up to scratch as far as the fin is concerned.I have bred a few Albino L144s now & have had them with fin damage but you would expect to see regrowth within 4 or so weeks under good conditions.

My thoughts entirely Paul, but there's been absolutely no regeneration of the fin whatsoever.
