when do angelfish stop growing?

Hi, just a quick question really. My angelfish pair will be around a year old now but they seem to have stopped growing. They're not as big as I'd expected them to get and I wondered at what age they stop growing?

Are my pair likely to grow any more or this it now?

I find that the fastest growth is typically in about the first six months, then growth almost stops for a couple of months whilst the fish mature sexually, after which growth resumes, but at a slower rate. With females, the more often they spawn the slower their growth. So keeping females in crowded community tanks where they're less likely to try to spawn, can help produce larger fish. That said, as with humans, some fish are likely to grow larger than others.

that follows with what I've seen ... they were tiny when I got them last summer (so allowing for time at the breeder etc I'm guessing they are around a year old) they grew rapidly and then slowed. I've had (I think) 4 spawns from them but nothing recently (not since before xmas)

The male is still smaller than the female but he is a little younger - maybe by around a month. I'd say the female is currently about 6-7cm from base of tail to nose tip. I was expecting her to be much bigger by now. Going from what you are saying then she is still growing but at a slower rate? Perhaps I'm just not noticing the growth if it's slow. The male is probably about 1cm smaller.

I'm not worried about them. They seem healthy enough. I was just interested to know more about growth. Thanks

I would imagine that if you took the fish out of the tank every month and measured it's length / width / fin height its size would have increased, but we don't do that do we? Because we see our fish every day we don't really see a difference. Bigger tanks, changing decor can make fish look smaller, we also compare the size of fish to the other inhabitants (which are all growing too).

I've noticed growth on my fish not only in body length, but in broadness over their noses.

I've just put a mature g/g male in the main tank, now my 'big fish' are only medium.

It's often all in the mind. Fish growth can also be measured by weight, it's just awkward getting them to stand still on the bathroom scales

what I have noticed is the head shape of the male is changing. His forehead is becoming more pronounced - he's not got a nunchal (sp) hump or anything but the gentle slope is becoming more angled. It hard to describe but I know what I mean and maybe a few of you that have watched male angels grow from tiny into adults will understand what I'm meaning
