Hi everyone, My name is Richard and I've been keeping fish for over 40 years. I've been a big fan of the traditional angel fish and the description in my TFH Encyclopedia of Tropical fish listed it as Pterophyllum Eimekei with the three bold black bars and the bright red eye. I've been looking out for quiet a long time for some good specimens without much luck. So by joining your forum I'm hoping you might be able help me source some.

Regards Rich

Hi welcome to the forum.
these days P. eimekei is regarded as a synonym of P. scalare. However there are a number of regional populations of P. scalare, and it's quite likely that at some point in the future that the name eimekei will be reapplied to one of these populations.

One wild population comes from the Manacapuru region of Brazil, and these are known as Manacapuru red backs :-

the ones I have definitely don't have red eyes :-

A couple of years ago now I bred one of these to a domestic silver angel, and lots of those do have red eyes :-

Another wild population comes from the Rio Nanay in Peru, these are sometimes misnamed as "Peruvian altums" :-

Recently I've crossed some Czech bred Rio Nanays with a couple of my Manacapuru cross fish, see this thread :-

can't be sure what they're going to look like as adults, and it's too soon to know what colour their eyes will be, but I've a feeling they're going to be nice!
